- Tell us a little about yourself?
Well, My name is Bevern Oguk, the first born in my humble family. I am the Creative Director at CO-BE Inc, a fashion brand I co-founded with
my partner and fellow designer, Collins Karanja.
My role is to oversee the direction we want our brand to take, come up with our collection themes, design, collaborate with associate tailors, and many more small roles. I am largely into arts, positivism and inspiring others.
- What does fashion mean to you?
Fashion to me is an avenue I use to express my artworks and creativity. The glitz and glamour that comes with the fashion industry comes last.
- When did you realize that you wanted to be a fashion designer?
I realized that I wanted to major into fashion after high school. I took my drawings and paintings to art galleries, but I felt limited because I wanted to use more than just a pencil, colors and canvas to express myself. Fashion allows me to use different materials, from fabric, beads,
leather, thread to dye. However, I plan to continue creating artwork, specifically using a the collage technique sometime in future.
- What inspires you?
I am inspired by many things, a lot of it is in the everyday life but the desire to create pushes me further.
- Tell us about your designs.
My designs are edgy, modern, simple but sophisticated. You can tell a CO-BE design from the other designers. I love to use neutral colors. What my designs represent is, ‘Youthful Luxury’.
- Are you currently working on a collection?
I am currently working on the accessories and menswear collection, having already released the womens wear collection called ‘Ying Yang’ which was received incredibly well.
- Which models ,photographer, event organizers or stylist, have you worked with in the fashion industry?
Wow! I have worked with a lot of brilliant people in the industry. I have worked with agencies like Knitwear Models, Strut It Africa, and individuals like Ingred Awuor. Some of the photographers I have worked with are: Thandiwe Muriu, Emmanuel Jambo, Radekartphoto, Jose Thome, Keef Photography and many more.
- Which celebrities have you dressed?
I have dressed people like Octopizzo, Bankslave and Joe Muchiri.
- How long does it take to work on a design?
It all depends on how complex it is, some take a day, some even a month due to a complex design development process.
- What should women throw out of their closets? Why do you hate this trend?
Women should throw away the black and white tights, and plastic doll shoes. They make all ladies look the same.
- What are some of your favorite fashion magazines, websites or books?
- What advice do you have for aspiring designers, photographers and bloggers?
My advice for designers is to be original, do it because you love it, not because it is ‘cool’. Before I started my own line, I worked under an already established brand as an intern to learn the business before starting. Photographers and bloggers, I would tell them to believe in themselves, have very thick skin because the industry is very competitive. Most importantly, designers, photographers and bloggers should work together as they need each other. They should also be themselves ,not try too hard to look like the international counterparts.
